Craig Wright Not Actually Recognized As Satoshi

Bitcoin Cash SV (BSV) supporter and the man who claims to be Satoshi Nakamoto, Craig Wright, recently registered for a patent that would have him be credited as the author of the Bitcoin whitepaper. This was only a registration and not a patent, and to clarify some doubts posed by the cryptocommunity, the US Copyright Office has issued a statement regarding the application.

In a press release, the Copyright Office said that “it does not investigate the truth of any statement made”,

As a general rule, when the Copyright Office receives an application for registration, the claimant certifies as to the truth of the statements made in the submitted materials. The Copyright Office does not investigate the truth of any statement made…In a case in which a work is registered under a pseudonym, the Copyright Office does not investigate whether there is a provable connection between the claimant and the pseudonymous author.

Filing a registration does not take much effort and is in no way a validation of a registrant’s claims. Reports were widely circulated, which gave the misleading impression that the US Copyright Office had recognized Wright to be the author of the whitepaper – which is not the case.

The press release also states,

Disputes over the claims in a registration may be heard before federal courts, including disputes over authorship of a work. Someone who intentionally includes false information in an application may be subject to penalties.

BSV’s price rose sharply following news of the initial registration.
