Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Ripple (XRP), and IOTA (MIOTA) have all been directly referenced in the Netflix show How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast). The German made series is a comedy drama and explores the technical side of crypto in a slightly more robust manner than other on-screen appearances of the technology.
The association with drugs will no doubt irk some crypto investors, who wish for crypto to lose the association with illegal activity and be considered a legitimate asset class with inarguable benefits. These investors often state that Bitcoin has moved past its Silk Road days and warrants a genuine open discussion on its usability.
Crypto Still Gets Portrayed Negatively in Mainstream Media
Crypto has seen a few mentions on television and in film. Hollywood movie, in another negative portrayal, saw cryptocurrency play a key role in the film’s plot, while CNBC is due to release a documentary called Bitcoin: Boom or Bust, which goes over the history of the first decentralized currency of the market.
And although Bitcoin and the market has seen more appreciative discussion on mainstream news media over the past year or so, and though not entirely free from critical discussion, still suffers from much unwarranted criticism framed in outdated, uninformed arguments.
